    Al Williamson's adaptation of the Flash Gordon movie is possibly my favorite comic of all time, though it's technically a poor adaptation. Williamson famously hated the campy tone of that movie and made his version strictly serious while also accurately adapting the story from the film.

    Good review , good movie got to see it three times .my only regret was the inclusion of Chiren not against the character as the inclusion of a daughter works but the making of her being from Zalem with the mark of Zalem would be better not to have the mark but have it just on Doc Ido . That way we can still have the reveille of the secret of Zalem in later sequels .at the time of the OVA they did not know about the bio chip. And the live movie could have corrected this flaw.. Also don't like having Nova up in Zalem he's not the bad guy ,there is no real bad guy why do movies have to be boiled down to good versus Evi all the time .

    Finally got around to watching your thoughts on Alita Battle Angel. I agree with most of your points, while it’s interesting to compare manga to film the issue I have is that the stinger ending wasn’t as satisfying. But I appreciate the effort it took in order to adapt the core elements of the story, and I think average audiences will still enjoy it. Overall good to hear your thoughts and while doing face cam.

    • @ShellPrestoDiBaggio
      @ShellPrestoDiBaggio 3 года назад

      I didn't mind the stinger ending, but I actually like that sort of end where the main character is determined to do the next big step, and I felt she had overcome enough that the ending didn't feel empty and just leave you longing the way, say, Avengers Infinity War did, where you knew it was half a story and everyone is defeated and you have to wait for the next sequel. But I don't know if I would have felt the same way if that also wasn't where the anime ended. Part of what I love about that movie is how ridiculously close it was to the anime.

    I like the image of Labyrinth etching the sigils into the door. Do the sigils (Enochian maybe?) actually spell anything out? I am always a bit amused when those kind of elements spell out "Eat at Joe's" etc. (Bonus Question: What are the two symbols in the Ascension Epoch logo and what are their significance?)

    • @ShellPrestoDiBaggio
      @ShellPrestoDiBaggio 3 года назад

      The sigils are in fact gibberish that I thought looked cool, although the font is called Enochian. Is it? I don't know. However, you may be surprised to know that the pattern on his cloak are the three hiragana characters in the Japanese word for door, tobira. When I do "generic fantasy decoration" on a character, I like using Japanese characters for a word I can associate with the character so I don't overthink the pattern. Regarding the Ascension Epoch logo, I cannot remember what the symbology for those is called to look them up correctly and link them. I'm completely drawing a blank. But they loosely mean Ascension and Epoch. The second one in particular is a stylization of Saturn for "time."

      Thanks for the heaping of compliments! Yeah, I was really proud of the title, and I'd be lying if I didn't say I love how the drawing turned out. It has a flaw here and there, but that's art for ya. And Atomic Ranger is really fun to color. The story is more laid back and introspective, but that's gotta happen sometimes. Heroes can't always be saving the world. (Although I do have an excellent story with Labyrinth and a holiday get-together being crashed for a future video.) Let me state for the record, I don't disagree with the content discussed in this video. A lot of it is very interesting and on point. But I think it's important to understand that copyright law is a legal and business construct and as another source of revenue for the government. It is not for the promotion of the arts. But the laws are flawed and in need of refinement. Also, as it pertains to artists and writers, one of the ways to protect yourself and your work (not just from others stealing it) is to copyright your work and only publish through your own publishing company. It's probably best if the publishing company is as an LLC or other type of corporation. This affords the creators the most legal protections. There is much more to this subject than just copyright laws themselves. All creators, be them artistic or writers, should familiarize themselves with state and federal laws before deciding to copyright their work through the U.S. Copyright Office or using a Creative Commons license or forming a publishing company .

    • @ShellPrestoDiBaggio
      @ShellPrestoDiBaggio 4 года назад

      A fine and well-thought addition to the discussion. I agree that the decision of whether to copyright or go CC must be carefully weighed -- in the next video (which I think comes out today... we did 3 with Kim Holm), he says something to the effect is that a bridge is needed for copyright law, and that CC is a rowboat. There's no perfect or one-size-fits-all answer. But I think the more creators know about Copyright, Trademark, Creative Commons, and Public Domain, the better off they will be regardless. If an artist is going the Copyright route, publishing through themselves is the best deal from a keeping-your-rights perspective. Weighing your rights against your immediate and potential profits is an important part of any artist's decisions. Thank you for adding to the conversation.

      Thanks so much! I've really been trying to push my illustrations further, so I'm glad that shines through. The Kickstarter funded, which is great. Now we're trying to hit stretch goals. Thanks for watching and commenting, and I hope you have an awesome day!

    Thanks for all the advice and motivation. I also enjoyed the manga and anime references haha. Haven't heard of that other Rumiko Takahashi manga, so I'll have to look into it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

      Thanks so much for the compliment, and for checking out my channel. Drawing is a skill you develop -- I've been doing it for more than 30 years now. That may sound daunting, but I tell people that to reinforce that no matter what your skill level, if you devote practice to it, you will get better. Good drawing is not unobtainable, and with things like RUclips to help us learn these days, it's easier than ever to figure out what you find difficult. Or, in other words, if you want to make awesome art, keep drawing!

    I’m sad that I missed this in theaters, but very happy to have it in my movie collection. Such a fun movie with a lot of great world building and lore. The story was fun, though it’s definitely a lot of set up. If they don’t make a sequel it’ll always feel like an incomplete story, which kinda sucks. I enjoyed hearing your take on it! I actually reviewed this not long ago myself. Great review!

    I would so mark out for a Santo vs Bulwark story! I love the idea that Santo is running around in the Ascension Epoch universe. To the questions - My favorite wrestler is Askuka at present. She's very funny in real life and a great wrestler. Becky Lynch when she was a steampunk was also awesome.

      It's not THE El Santo, but, yeah, Santo Caballero is definitely our wink wink and a nod to him. I love those movies to bits. Also, congrats! You won the contest! I'll hit you up on MeWe though for your addy. I've never actually seen Asuka in a match, although I've seen her in gifs before, if that counts as anything. The only super-modern wrestling I've been watching is Lucha Underground, mainly because I don't have cable.

    Great video! Kim is an interesting artist and has a pretty cool outlook on his work. I look forward to you guys putting stuff onto DTRPG, as I shop there frequently.

      He's a pretty cool dude, indeed! He'll be on at least two more times. We'll talk copyright and creative commons on the next two.

    Fantastic interview/roundtable with Kim... really enjoyed seeing the examples of his artwork and learning about his process. His story is humble yet inspiring for artists striving to find their place.

      I like his accidental success, and that he didn't give up drawing. Truly inspiring.

    Nice stuff! I never used guidelines to straighten with a rotation transform, I always just used the ruler tool over two points on a horizontal line on the drawing, then used image, rotate, arbitrary, and ps straightens it. It is nice to know an alternative. I also never considered using erasable color pencils, and using actions saved to remove them from under inks after scanning. Erasing pencils is always a pain.

      Back in the day, I could never get the ruler tool to come out perfectly straight. Picky of me, I know, but this works best for me; and that's kind of how art works. It's not always about what's "right" just "what works/what we individually like." I'm happy to say I usually don't erase anymore, so saving that one step is pretty big for me.

    Love the Gullivar Jones image! Flying carpets need to make a comeback in this fallen age of fantasy.
